We welcome applications from students with a background in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Data Science Computer Science or related fields. A strong foundation in research methodologies, sustainability concepts, and experience in IoT, BIM, or data analysis will be advantageous. Candidates should be adaptable to the multidisciplinary nature of our projects. Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Undergraduate students are encouraged to explore research opportunities in our lab. We often host students through dedicated programs and initiatives. If you’re interested, please get in touch to discuss potential research topics and positions.
See undergraduate research assistant opportunities below:
1. Sustainable Construction Role: The student will assist with sustainable building materials research and laboratory preparation for sustainable materials and construction research projects. Tasks include creating and testing panels made with renewable materials, conducting lab work, collecting data, and conducting basic analysis for material studies. Qualifications: Basic knowledge of building systems, ability to work independently, familiarity with hand tools, and data collection skills.
2. AI for Sustainable Buildings Role: The student will support the development of an open-source annotated image dataset of U.S. residential construction sites, with an emphasis on sustainable materials. Tasks include capturing and annotating drone and ground-level imagery, time-series data analysis, and assisting in training and evaluating Machine Learning and object detection models using deep learning. Qualifications: Interest Strong interest in sustainable buildings and construction, computer vision, or AI. Basic proficiency in Python and image processing tools (e.g., OpenCV). Exposure to building performance, green construction techniques is a plus.
3. Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting Role: This position focuses on evaluating piezoelectric sensors for motion-based and vibration-based energy harvesting in buildings. The student will assist in reviewing sensor types, collecting field data, conducting power output and voltage monitoring experiments, and prototyping small-scale applications for energy harvesting on campus. Qualifications: Interest in renewable energy systems, sustainability, or sensor development. Basic knowledge of physics or materials science; some lab experience preferred. Experience with Arduino/Raspberry Pi or similar platforms is a plus.
